Gravel: New England
When you consider the explosive growth of gravel cycling in America, it’s impossible to ignore the tiny state of Vermont. It’s home to some of the oldest and most beloved events, such as the Vermont Overland and Rasputitsa. And when you look at the champions of the still-young sport of gravel racing, it’s like a who’s who of Vermonters. Ian Boswell, Ted King and Moriah Wilson to name a few.
The foundation of Vermont gravel culture is the roads that wander through the astonishingly picturesque Green Mountains. It’s that beauty that makes it such a draw for cyclists up and down the US east coast. The densest, wealthiest corridor in the US cycling market is the stretch of Interstate 95 from Boston, through New York City, down to Washington DC. What’s their riding playground? Their gravel testing ground? It’s a relatively short drive north up to Vermont.
